For nearly 20 years, The Bed Post has been a trusted name in Sevenoaks, offering high-quality beds and mattresses with a personal touch. Founded in 1987 by Oliver’s father-in-law, the business has grown into a well-established family-run retailer with five shops, including a store in Dunton Green and winner of the coveted National Bed Federation’s Large Independent Bed Retailer of the Year award in 2024-2025
Oliver joined the business in 2013 after seven years in the police, stepping in when his father-in-law considered retiring. “My father-in-law built this business from the ground up, and when he was planning to retire, it seemed a shame to let it go,” Oliver explains. “I enjoyed my time in the police, but this was an opportunity to take on something new, and I haven’t looked back.”

Today, The Bed Post operates five stores across Kent and Surrey, with the Sevenoaks branch in Dunton Green remaining a key location. Since then, Oliver has taken the lead, ensuring The Bed Post continues to provide a personal, community-focused service. “I do everything. One day I’m doing the accounts, another I’m unloading lorries, and on the weekend, I might be out delivering.” he says.
The Sevenoaks store has been a part of the community for nearly 20 years. “We had a lease renewal this year, so that means it’s been two decades in Sevenoaks,” Oliver explains. “It’s a really special place for us because of its strong community feel.” Word-of-mouth recommendations play a big role in the store’s success; “if you ask people why they’ve come in, it’s because someone told them to. We see this all the time on local Facebook groups, someone asks for a bed recommendation, and almost without fail, people say The Bed Post.”
Customer service is at the heart of The Bed Post’s success. With a team of long-standing staff, some of whom have been with the company for over 25 years, the business has built a reputation for expert knowledge and reliable service.
“One of our delivery drivers has been with us for over two decades,” Oliver says. “He’s been to the same houses multiple times, delivering beds to different generations of the same family. We love being part of those stories.”
Alongside its commitment to service, The Bed Post gives back to local schools and charities through its 10 for 10 initiative. “The idea is that we can support local charities by people supporting us,” Oliver explains. “Customers get a 10% discount, and 10% of the value of the sale goes to the charity of their choice.” The initiative also supports West Kent Mind, with customers choosing the mental health charity to receive donations through their purchases. “It’s a great way of giving back to the local community,” he says.
Looking ahead, The Bed Post is focused on maintaining the company’s strong reputation and potentially expanding. “Last year, we won the Large Independent Bed Retailer of the Year Award, which we’re really proud of as it was a national award,” he says. “We’re always looking for the next shop, but I won’t open one just for the sake of it. It has to be the right location.”
When not working, Oliver enjoys spending time in the district, visiting local favourites such as Bojangles in Dunton Green and The Chequers in Kemsing. “Hever Castle is a big family favourite for us,” he adds. “The water maze is always a hit, and it’s a fantastic day out.”
With nearly four decades of trading and a dedicated local following, The Bed Post continues to provide expert service, quality products, and strong community connections in the Sevenoaks district.
